Equipment Anchorage

Rows of rooftop mechanical units set on a flat roof

Overview

Rooftop units, generators, tanks and other mechanical equipment must stay in place in wind and earthquakes, and the framing carrying them must be adequate. We design the supports, curbs, restraints and anchorage for the seismic and wind forces required by ASCE 7, check the supporting structure, and prepare stamped details for the permit.

Typical Projects

  • Rooftop HVAC Unit Replacements and Curb Adapters
  • Generators, Fuel Tanks and Transformers
  • Rooftop Screens, Platforms and Dunnage
  • Tall Cabinets, Racks and Mechanical Equipment Inside Buildings

Common Structural Needs

Supporting Structure

Roof beams, joists and deck checked for the operating weight of the equipment and its supports.

Seismic Force

Equipment forces from the nonstructural component provisions of ASCE 7 Chapter 13, based on mounting height and component importance.

Wind Uplift and Sliding

Rooftop equipment wind forces from ASCE 7 and the restraint needed to resist them.

Anchors

Anchor capacity in concrete, steel or wood, including edge distance and, for post-installed anchors in concrete, the required evaluation report.

Vibration Isolators

Restraints that allow isolators to work without letting the equipment move under earthquake or wind loading.

Load Path

Forces carried into the building structure rather than the roofing.
