Sonic Echo Testing is a low-strain integrity test used for quality assurance, condition evaluation, and forensic testing of deep foundation elements, including drilled shafts, cast-in-place concrete piles, and timber piles. By analyzing stress wave reflections generated from a small impact at the foundation head, Sonic Echo testing can help estimate foundation length and identify significant anomalies, changes in cross-section, and other features affecting foundation continuity. Results should be interpreted in conjunction with project information and other available data.
Applications
Drilled Shafts
Cast-in-Place Concrete Piles
Timber Piles
Existing Foundation Investigations
Forensic Evaluation of Deep Foundations
What Sonic Echo Can Evaluate
Foundation length and shaft bottom reflections
Cracks or joints
Large inclusions or material changes
Increases or decreases in cross-section
Changes in surrounding soil conditions
Limitations
Small or gradual changes may not produce clear reflections.
Results may be affected by foundation geometry, surrounding soil conditions, and access limitations.
For long foundations in stiff soil or bedrock, bottom reflections may be weak or unidentifiable.
Sonic Echo testing does not determine structural capacity or static bearing capacity.
